Sculptistory

I often forget that a lot of collectors of the Impossimals don't realise that I also produce sculptures on a semi regular basis. This is a selection from over the last ten years, along with this are Lost Impossimal sculptures, Smithy's World Cup home and away Impossimals and the metal rings from 2007. Quite a collection!

Most sculptures come from paintings but the latest pieces such as the Rub-A-Dub Tub and 99 Problems came directly from sculptures I made to produce the painting in the first place.

They all go through a rigorous design stage that makes sure they all look 'Impossimal' in design, I also use this to hide secrets in them too. The above heart shaped 'All You Need Is Love (left)' contains a hidden shadow image, when the light hits it at the correct angle the shadow created is a ring complete with a heart inside, exactly like the 2007 releas 'The Eternal Gift'

'My First Love' the heart holding Impossimal in the top picture was designed to be held very much like you would hold something precious and fits the curves exactly of your hand and chest close to your heart. 99 Problems on the other hand is made to an exact scale to replicate how big and ice cream felt when you were a child, only now you can relive that again as an adult simply by holding the sculpture.

Strange to look back but quietly comforting too, and for the future? Well let's just say it's gone all...

Maquette It Up

The studio is gradually filling up with lots and lots of Maquettes, small models that are used to help with the main painting, so much so that I'm having to box a few of them as they seem to be getting bigger and bigger. Not sure if it's a good thing but at least I'm building up quite a collection of potential future sculptures.

The one above is from a painting you may have seen called 'Togetherness', this was always going to be tricky because in the painting you can get away with not making the Impossimals lay together correctly. When it's sculpted there's no place to hide so this piece extends way beyond what the painting depicts.

More simpler to create was this, it weighs quite a bit and had to be supported with the use of a rod through the centre heavily glued in using hot glue to hold it all together.

More complex was the bathtub, all of which had to be constructed out of wire, cardboard and balsa wood before the clay was added to the outside and shaped. Cracks appeared in the sides where the moisture was absorbed a little too quickly from the clay but this was sealed using PVA glue before being painted, all part of the look and feel of a first rough sculpture. It turned out quite nice and I can imagine would make a really nice sculpture if I sat and worked on it properly.

Even more complex though are the scenes, this one involves real chocolate flooding through a doorway. The chocolate was held in place using hot glue which had to be applied before the chocolate melted but once set it was quite solid. Unfortunately due to the food stuff this model will be destroyed when finished with but the room set will be kept.

So a few of the many models that are being produced at the moment, I wonder how many I will have at the end of the year?

Sparkle

Something exciting to announce for early 2014, new limited editions not on paper this time but on glass. We are currently working with Art Glass Designer Sarah Peterson of Caithness Glass to reproduce both 'Hold Me Close' and 'Forget Me Not' as sandcasts. A very tricky and delicate process of building up layer up layer of coloured sand, all handcrafted individually. The result is an Impossimal created out of 400 degree heated coloured sand behind glass, really you need to see one to appreciate the hard work that goes into them. It's probably explained better if you click on the image below.

You can also find more details about Caithness Glass and details of their processes at http://www.caithnessglass.co.uk/ Click on Sarah P Art Glass for a full range of Sarah's work although the Impossimals won't be making an appearance until early 2014 as we are just going through the production samples at the moment.

After so many sculptures over the years we thought we would try something a little different, the first results we have had so far look great and as the sun shines through them they come alive a little more. We are not being skimpy with the glass either, the samples we have are nearly seven inch square, two inch thick and weigh incredibly heavy, a quality item indeed.

In preparation for the new limited edition Impossimal glass sculpture release in 2014 the website will soon be updated with a full sculpture page as I know many of you haven't seen the full range and we thought it would be nice to show them all together.

In more recent news two new sculptures will be making an appearance in five weeks time, bet you can't guess who it's going to be...

Coming in at just over a foot high its been in development for fourteen months, it will join Bloodlines along with lots of other surprises as we begin the countdown.
